Sustainable Impact One Life at a Time
Posted: April 22, 2020

Most of you are probably familiar with how Curamericas Global works: we partner with underserved communities to make measurable and sustainable improvements in their health and well-being. This means, we find a local partner, which could be a doctor, a clinic or a hospital, and give them the support and tools they need to create and maintain a successful, community-based health care system.

The community-based model that we use means that we take health services out into the community, based on local needs, rather than waiting for people to seek services at health centers. This approach ensures health services and information are reaching community members in places where there is not a culture of seeking services from a healthcare facility or barriers to accessing them.

Taking services out into the community means that our health workers go door-to-door to visit every single household in the communities. By doing this, we ensure that every member in each community is counted and receiving the necessary healthcare education, support, services, and attention required.

Did you also know that we conduct significant health initiatives in local schools?

Every month, our community health workers visit schools in the communities where we work to provide important health education and services to school kids. When health workers visit the schools, they provide a welcome break during a long day of studying and engage students with fun and interactive games that educate and empower on a variety of health topics. The health topics change every month and include important themes like proper handwashing, water and sanitation, nutrition, and even emotional intelligence.

By providing these valuable health lessons, not only are we educating the kids, but we’re also reinforcing the same health lessons we’re teaching their mothers at home. By permeating the community with health information around things like diarrhea and malnutrition, some of the leading causes of mortality for kids under five, we’re helping reduce the incidence of these deadly conditions and saving the lives of countless children in here in the U.S., Guatemala and other places around the world.
