Our work to prevent COVID here in the U.S.
Posted: May 30, 2020

Since March 17, 2020 – Raleigh-based nonprofit Curamericas Global has enlisted a small army of hundreds of volunteers who are calling 15,000 families in Spanish across NC and the region. These calls are using CDC-provided information on how to detect symptoms, stay safe/prevent the spread, and what to do in case a person has symptoms or is exposed. The goal is to flatten the curve and reduce the burden on our health system; to ease suffering for our neighbors. While we are certainly health-focused, we know that there are many social determinants to health. The families we are calling are also asking about economic support, finding resources for food provision, and how to deal with roommates who are not social distancing. Whatever the question or concern is, Curamericas Global is there to find resources, to be an ally, and to support the people who may have nowhere else to turn. A sample of stories we have heard include:

  •       A mother worried about her kids getting infected and how to keep them safe.
  •       A father who was out of work and unsure of how to get food for his family.
  •       A young woman who wasn’t sure what to do if she got sick and assumed the best thing was to go directly to the Emergency Department.
  •       A father who was worried about his kids who had asthma and allergies.
  •       Where one can go for healthcare in their area.

We are answering these questions and more!

We know that knowledge is the foundation for healthy behaviors. The wrong information can cause an increased burden on both people and the health system. We provide the right information in Spanish; we seek families out rather than waiting for them to call us. We believe all families have a right to basic health information and services. Join us and volunteer today, in English or in Spanish.

While many of the people we call currently reside in NC, SC or VA, we have supported families in more than 17 states. This picture is as of May 1, 2020.

We are reaching the most vulnerable. This project has been completely unbudgeted and paid for by Curamericas operating expenses. We need your help. Would you consider giving now to help us?
