Our Fall interns

Curamericas Global is excited to have 7 new interns working with us this fall! Our interns, each has a diverse background and skill set that they bring to our organization. Most importantly, all are passionate about promoting public health and international development. We love having them on our team and are excited to continue working with them throughout the next several months.

                     Marian Larson, Grants & Editorial Intern: Kinston, NC

In addition to her work at Curamericas Global, Marian has been a freelance writer/editor since 2004. She earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in News-Editorial Journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1999. Since then, Marian has worked with a number of organizations at home and abroad, including the Peace Corps, where she volunteered in the Republic of Kiribati from 2001-2003, and Big Brothers Big Sisters in Milwaukee, WI as a Case Manager in 2001.

Marian was drawn to Curamericas Global for a number of reasons, saying: “I’ve always been interested in underserved communities and international travel. Being a mother myself, I also connect with the maternal and child population Curamericas serves.” Marian hopes to become a freelance grant writer and continue to “help non-profit organizations do good work in our world.” In her free time, Marian enjoys spending time                                                        with her three kids, ages ten, seven, and four, as well as cooking, swimming, traveling, and                                                        walking on the beautiful green ways of Raleigh!

Katie King, Graphic Design Intern: Etowah, NC

Katie is one of two Graphic Design Interns at Curamericas Global. She attends school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she is a senior journalism and global studies major. Alongside her work here at Curamericas Global, Katie is presently a graphic design intern with 2nd Helping Media and www.acruisingcouple.com. This year she worked internationally, serving as the Social Media & Marketing Intern for the Hotel Belmar in Monteverde, Costa Rica. In 2010 and 2011, Katie won a Quill and Scroll awards by the Quill and Scroll society, an international journalism honor society, and was also runner up for North Carolina High School Journalist of the Year in 2011.

Katie is devoted to design and international relations, thus her work here at Curamericas Global “perfectly combines two things [she] is passionate about.”  Katie adds, “I want to work somewhere that makes a difference in people’s lives, and Curamericas does that.” In                                                        her free time she likes to swing dance, hike, travel, and read. Upon graduation, she                                                                      hopes to adopt one of these free time activities and travel around the world to write and                                                             explore.

                   Alison Gamble, Outreach & Development Intern: Raleigh, NC

Alison graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2013 with a degree in Communications and Social Entrepreneurship. After graduation, Alison established a non-profit organization, Amanzi Education Center, in Cape Town, South Africa. Amanzi Education Center is a comprehensive after-school program in Cape Town that empowers high school students from underprivileged areas. It prepares them for life after graduation by helping them get into college with scholarships and begin their professional careers. Alison came to Curamericas Global because she “wanted to work with an organization that had a global focus”. She loves the community-based, impact-oriented approach at Curamericas Global. Additionally, she wanted to see how the organization is using this approach in different communities around the world. She spends her free time mostly in the outdoors where she enjoys paddle boarding and rock climbing. Alison also enjoys watching college football.

    Megan Ingram, Graphic Design Intern: Highpoint, NC

Megan graduated in 2013 with a degree in advertising and graphic design. In the same year, she won a student ADDY award from the American Advertising Federation. Megan admires Curamericas Global for the “selflessness of the services provided”. She says: “I came to Curamericas to use my design skills to become a part of something bigger than my own work.” Megan is married with a nine month old baby boy. In her free time she enjoys visiting history museums and photography.

Laura Dugom, Administrative Intern: Goldsboro, NC

Laura currently attends Meredith College where she is studying biology and is also a member of the Biology Honor Society, Tribeta. She first heard about Curamericas in her Introduction to Public Health Class during her sophomore year in college. As a pre-med student, Laura chose Curamericas Global because of our work with maternal and child health care. During her time here, she hopes to “gain a better understanding about the methodology that Curamericas uses when going to [these] countries.” Laura says her decision to apply for an internship at Curamericas Global was an easy one, because “Curamericas is an amazing nonprofit that is doing more than just providing health care to parts of the world that need help, [they] are providing the resources needed to create sustainable health care.” In her free time, Laura enjoys reading, painting, traveling, and spending time with her family.

                                           Andrew Zavaleta, Outsource & Development Intern: Lexington, NC

Andrew is currently a sophomore at North Carolina State University studying Political Science and Chinese. He had no prior work experience. But came to Curamericas Global after having been active with the Boy Scouts for over ten years. Therein, he earned his Eagle Scout Award along with three Eagle palms. Andrew is also a member of the NC State colony of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. Because of his interest in international relations, Curamericas Global was “a great place to begin [his] professional career.” Andrew notes, “Curamericas has provided me with an opportunity to get involved globally and impact the lives of thousands, something I think is essential as the world continues to become more connected.” In his free time, Andrew enjoys camping, long boarding, and discovering hip-hop music.

                 Valentine Ogachi, Administrative Intern: Raleigh, NC

Originally from Kenya, Valentine moved to the United States when she was nine years old. After Needham Broughton High School, she has continued her studies at NC State where she is a Public Health Major. Valentine first heard about Curamericas Global from our Africa Program Manager, Florence Amadi, which prompted her to become a part of the Curamericas team. Valentine admires Curamericas Global for the difference that we have made in the world. She is motivated by “the fact that they {Curamericas Global} have proof to show this. Valentine usually spends her free time reading autobiographies and spending time with friends and family, while she also enjoys photography.
