Meet Our Summer 2016 Interns!

So far in 2016, 20 of our interns and volunteers donated over 1,500 hours to our main office in Raleigh. These wonderful volunteers increased our organizational capacity by working on a range of projects, including:

  • Program management
  • Grant writing
  • Fundraising events
  • Social media
  • Administrative support

Thank you to all of our incredibly generous volunteers – your work helps us save more lives in forgotten communities around the world!

Andie Woodson

Andie Woodson

Favorite movie:

If you could travel anywhere, where would it be:
– Ireland is very top on my dream destinations list.

What is something you hate but wished you love:
– Quinoa

Andie is currently working on her undergraduate degree from Meredith College in Biology and Public Health with a minor in Communications. She helped co-found the Curamericas Club at her university with aspirations to one-day work at the Center for Disease Control. When she’s not too busy crushing on Usher or conducting research on Baylis’ (parasite), she enjoys walking through parks, coloring and playing with her pet bunny. Andie one day hopes to see more children reading and being outdoors as she believes video games are taking over and that reading and appreciating nature is getting lost in technology.

The most embarrassing/funniest thing to happen to you:
– In my freshmen year in college, I fell asleep in a huge BIO 101 lecture and woke up finding out that everyone was staring at me.

Emma, a master’s student at UNC-Chapel Hill  Gillings School of Public Health, has traveled to every continent to countries including Peru, Tanzania, Burma and the Dominican Republic! From her travels, she facilitated the training’s of foreign doctors, medical students and participated in a health policy research project through previously working at Korea International Cooperation Agency. In the future, Emma hopes to plan projects directed towards long-term benefit in health care systems in developing countries through educational support. When she’s not focusing on school, you can find Emma taking a walk, at a local coffee shop or even chopping vegetables.

 

Rachel Ear.

One unique quality of hidden talent:
– I can remember birthdays really well.

What is something you hate but wished you loved:
– Ultimate Frisbee.

When was the last time you tried something new?:
– When I had a layover in Japan, I had onigiri with salmon and it was delicious!

Rachel, a current undergraduate at UNC – Greensboro with a degree in Public Health and Biology and a minor in Chinese, loves to be immersed in nature whenever she has free time. Whether it’s hiking, kayaking, stargazing or even traveling, she still sets her focus on one-day minimizing health issues and maximizing rights for underdeveloped countries.  When she’s not too busy doing yoga or photography, Rachel hopes to not only create more awareness on global health issues, specifically those directed towards refugees, but to have more action taken in order to solve it.

Jasmia received her degree in Sociology and International Studies, with a concentration in Economy and Environment, from North Carolina State University.. She believes that one’s health is their wealth, and not having healthcare should not prevent anyone from reaching their dreams. Jasmia is also passionate about providing sustainable education and resources to help others live happy and healthy lifestyles. In fact, she lived in Sololá, Guatemala for 2.5 months doing research on criminal justice institutions. In her free time, Jasmia loves to craft, particularly hair accessories, headbands and hats.

What is one unique quality or a hidden talent you have?
– I’m pretty good at climbing trees!

Annalisa is a graduate from North Carolina State University with a degree in International Studies, concentrating in global sustainable development with research areas in environmental sustainability, public health and refugees.  She believes that the world is becoming increasingly interconnected and too many people are unfairly affected by systemic problems. Annalisa is a huge animal lover who enjoys spending free time in her hammock, adventuring outdoors, and sailing. Annalisa believes that the world’s most pressing issue is “tragedy of the commons” and aspires to make a meaningful impact through a career in international development.

When was the last time you tried something new?
– Today, I am trying to make beet salad.

Annie graduated from Rutgers University with a degree in Humanities and Social Studies. Being from Lima, Peru, Annie has done a fair share of traveling to places such as Macau, Czech Republic, Austria, and Indonesia. In her free time, she loves to garden, dance, and eat anything spicy. She believes the most pressing issue in the world today is the hatred due to race or religion an asks, “Why can’t we all get along?” When she’s not watching her favorite movies, “Crossing Delancey” and “Once Again”, Annie aspires to be a good person, mom, wife and citizen by helping, learning, listening and understanding.
