Chapel Hill native, Kendall Harkey, will begin as a program intern at Curamericas Global. Curamericas is a Raleigh-based organization dedicated to saving the lives of women and children in underserved communities across the globe.

As a program intern, Harkey is responsible for researching best practices for exclusive breast feeding in Curamericas’ project sites in Guatemala, translating health manuals from from Spanish to English and assisting all of the organization’s departments. Additional responsibilities include drafting tax receipts for donors, maintaining records, and assisting with travel arrangements. In a recent Facebook post, Harkey spoke to what she most enjoys about her internship.

“In college, I […] learned about international development and how sustainable, community-based development works, and I wanted to see it in practice. Curamericas seemed like a natural fit…I’m gaining experience that I can use to pursue my goal of attaining a master’s degree in public health. I’m seeing the practical effects of community-based development here with Curamericas.”

Harkey is currently majoring in International Studies with a concentration in Sustainable Development at North Carolina State University. She hopes to take the experience with Curamericas to a master’s program in public health and, ultimately, pursue a position working in water and sanitation programs in Latin America, focusing on the intersection between climate change, water and sanitation development, and conservation.
