Nurse Alma wrote a letter about her own experience that drives her work at Curamericas Global. Alma Dominguez is a Head Nurse at Curamericas- Guatemala and one of Curamericas-Guatemala’s founding staff members. She started working with us more than 20 years ago and has made a huge impact on women and mothers living in rural Guatemala who suffer from limited healthcare access. We are so appreciative of our long-term partnership and friendship with Nurse Alma! Her heartwarming letter is below:

Hello:

My name is Alma Domínguez, one of the first nurses at the Calhuitz maternity home, in San Sebastián Coatán, in the department of Huehuetenango, Guatemala. I came to Curamericas in 2001 with the aim of helping women in rural areas who, due to difficult access, to a health service, the lack of education, the economic situation but above all the machismo they have lost their lives due to situations of pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum, a situation for which my mother also lost her life.  She had 16 pregnancies 7 live children 6 dead children and 3 miscarriages and with the last development of gestational diabetes her baby was in a transverse presentation, which is why she necessarily had to perform a cesarean section, she thought that the operation would never heal due to her diabetes, no one from the staff, the health officer from the clinic in my town approached her to educate her on health and inform her that gestational diabetes disappeared in the last months of pregnancy, my mother died and her baby with her, leaving me with the responsibility of her youngest children.

The death of my mother was my inspiration to continue my studies to train to become a nurse and in this way help women who, like my mother, have died and have left their children without the protection and care of his mother.

Curamericas does great humanitarian work by managing and seeking funds to develop projects in various parts of the world, especially where the women and children of the most neglected communities live. Thanks to their support and donations, the people from our project come to provide education and direct attention to the most needy, daily they ask God Our Lord to multiply your funds but above all that God give you and your families a lot of Health so that you continue supporting the projects of Curamericas since this is one of the few organizations in the world that has contributed to reducing maternal, neonatal and infant mortality and that really does Public Health where it is present through its projects.

 Mi nombre es Alma Domínguez, una de las primeras enfermeras de la casa materna de Calhuitz, en San Sebastián Coatán del departamento de Huehuetenango Guatemala, llegue a Curamericas en 2001 con el objetivo de ayudar a las mujeres del área rural que por el difícil acceso a un servicio de salud, la falta de educación, la situación económica pero sobre todo el machismo ellas han perdido la vida por situaciones del embarazo, el parto  y el post-parto, situación por la cual mi madre  también perdió la vida, mi madre tuvo 16 embarazos 7 hijos vivos 6 hijos muertos y 3 abortos y con el ultimo desarrollo una diabetes gestacional su bebé estaba en presentación transversa razón por la que necesariamente había que realizarle una cesárea, ella pensó que la operación nunca sanaría por su diabetes nadie del personal de salud de la clínica de mi pueblo se acercó para darle educación en salud e informarle que la diabetes gestacional desaparecía en los últimos meses del embarazo, mi madre murió y con ella su bebe dejándome a mí con la responsabilidad de sus hijos más pequeños. 

La muerte de mi madre fue mi inspiración para continuar mis estudios y capacitar para ser una enfermera y de ésta manera ayudar a las mujeres que al igual que  mi madre han muerto y han dejado a sus hijos sin la protección y el cuidado de su madre. 

Curamericas hace una gran labor humanitaria al gestionar y buscar fondos para desarrollar proyectos en varias partes del mundo, es seguro que las mujeres y los niños de las comunidades más postergadas a donde gracias a su apoyo y donación llegan las personas de  nuestro proyecto a brindar educación y atención directa a los más necesitados, a diario piden a Dios Nuestro Señor multiplique su economía pero sobre todo que Dios les de mucha Salud  a ustedes y a sus familias para que continúen apoyando los proyectos de Curamericas ya que esta es una de las pocas organizaciones en el mundo que ha contribuido a reducir la mortalidad materna neonatal e infantil y que de verdad hace Salud Pública donde tiene presencia a través de sus proyectos.
