Our Work in Liberia
Curamericas Global, Inc. has been awarded a USAID Child Survival Grant (CS-24) to implement a Child Survival Project in Nimba County, Liberia. The 5-year project began in October 2008 and will run through September 2013. Curamericas Global, Inc. will be awarded $1.25 million under the "New Partner" category of funding. Curamericas Global, Inc.'s in-country partner is Ganta United Methodist Hospital (GUMH), a Liberian NGO located in Ganta, Liberia, and serving a catchment area of approximately 135,000 inhabitants in north-central Liberia near the Guinea border. The Project is known as the Nehnwaa Child Survival Project. Nehnwaa is a term in the indigenous language of the region (Mano) which means protecting children.
You can be involved in supporting our Liberian project in many ways.
Our expeditions to Liberia through the International Volunteer Program offer the experience of a lifetime while providing resources and aid to the people of our project area. To get involved view our Volunteer Page or click here to learn more about our specific need for work teams to build wells and latrines.
Material and fiscal donations are needed to help meet our project goals. To learn how you or a community group can help by donating, contact Stephanie McMillan, stephanie@curamericas.org or call toll free 1-877-510-4787.
Malaria: Affecting Families in Liberia, Our Nehnwaa Child Survival Project is Fighting this Disease
38% of all hospital in-patient deaths and almost 19% of the deaths among children under the age of five in Liberia are caused by malaria*. Malaria is the second main focus of the Curamericas Global Nehnwaa Project, after Maternal and Newborn Care.
Families in our project area will learn proper care-seeking behavior if a child or expectant mother is experiencing fever, so that treatment will take place within 24 hours. Expectant mothers will also receive preventive treatment and our local health team will promote community clean-up campaigns to eliminate mosquito breeding sites.
At the beginning of our project, more than half of the households in our project reported owning an insecticide treated bed net, but the usage rate among expecting mothers was quite low. The Nehnwaa Project is not only distributing more bed nets but we are providing education about the importance of appropriate and consistent usage of these nets.
The Nehnwaa Project recently participated in a national bed net distribution campaign and distributed 706 nets in the project catchment area. 706 nets would protect over 1,000 children.
Although endemic year-round, the rainy months of June to September have shown a higher incidence of malaria outbreak. During this season, please remember the women, children, and families of our project.
